Fabulous February!

February in the PNW is a transition month that is eager to throw off the coat of winter and embrace the warm of spring...only in hints, though.
I always enjoy walking through our park.  Hardy flowers share in the anticipation of warmer weather!

We even enjoy occasional blue skies!

But recently I walked on a cloudy afternoon and got caught in an unpredicted shower!

Even my olive tree, sheltering indoors feels the call of spring!
I wonder if there will be olives this summer!

French restaurant for ladies' lunch!

Seated in the "breeze way"!
Trying out a Monte Cristo for the first time

Fan Review...the Monte Cristo turns out to be a plethora of flavors and textures all crispy and hot...layers of French toast concealing a heart bomb of ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, pineapple and tomato.  The side of raspberry jam is just enough to give soothing, sweet relief.
Would I order it again?  Probably not.  It was a fun culinary adventure but too much of breakfast all blended together for me.

It is a tribute to the French novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas

REFLECTIONS
Several years ago when I lived in northern Wisconsin February was a difficult month for me because of the severe cold and snow. Family Birthdays helped to emotionally warm up the days.  Here in Washington this month is milder, making physical living conditions much easier.  I am grateful for that. Yet, still more important are the Birthdays and friendships that warm my soul making the chilly winds not quite so chilling.

"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the fields, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much will he clothe you, O you of little faith!"  (Luke 12: 27-2)

Exploring Our German Culinary Roots'!!

My son, Chuck, came out from Milwaukee, WI to visit, work remote and help me for 10 days.  We included some German cooking!

Following the recipe for spätzle!

Grating and boiling the spätzle!

Frying the schnitzel!

Enjoying schnitzel and spätzle with mushroom gravy, along with pickled red cabbage! YUM! YA VO!

Chuck is a fan of marbled ryebread.

The proof is in the eating!

Chuck loved the bread!!
Would I routinely make the bread?
No. It is work intensive.  I would sell a loaf for $15.
Chuck buys his for $2.99.  But I'm sure it's not nearly as tasty and loving!
Can you guess what makes the dark marble, dark?

REFLECTIONS
I appreciate and enjoyed having Chuck here for 10 days!  It is good for me to be with family.  And for family to interact with each other, especially if they live far apart.  He did several fix up, clean up jobs  that are difficult for me to manage.  Mostly I am grateful for his attention and concern for me. It was nice to have someone around to cook with and share a meal. And it warms up the cold, rainy days of winter!  His visit also had motivated me to do a fair amount of cleaning before he came!  It's all a Win-Win!

This has been a good 3 GeoGram weeks in the life of Gram G!
