REACHING A GOAL/WEEK OF CUPS #2 CUP #3

    NATIONAL PARKS
APOSTLE ISLAND NATIONAL SHORELINE

Lake Superior north of Wisconsin is my favorite place to visit in the mid-west.  I bought this cup before I moved out here so I could recall the many trips up there. (It is 60 miles north of Park Falls.) There are several lighthouses since Lake Superior is a major shipping lane.  Madeline Island is the only one where people live.  It has a nostalgic, pioneering ambiance.  I have visited there often, arriving on the  ferry that crosses Lake Superior from the mainland several times a day.  In winter folks drive across on the "ice road".  That is one adventure I missed experiencing.

"The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located off Wisconsin’s peninsula in Lake Superior, the “largest, cleanest, and coldest of the Great Lakes.”  The lakeshore comprises beaches, cliffs, water, and 21 islands.
The Apostle Islands are a result of the glaciers that once covered North America. “Geologically they are originally part of the main land at the edge of the great riff or fault which formed the depression to which the waters of Lake Superior collected.”  When the glaciers melted, waves from the waters of Lake Superior caused erosion that formed the islands. The islands are composed of mostly red sandstone because of the glacial shift."    (Website info)

Lake Superior

Gichigami - Lake Superior

Lake Superior or Gitchigumi (meaning Great Water or Great Lake) is the largest lake in the world, containing an eighth of the world's fresh water. At its deepest point, it measures 1,333 fee in depth, with an average water temperature of 34 degrees F. Around two hundred rivers and thousands of streams feed into it, but the grand waters only have one outlet - Saint Mary's River (home of my ancestors) which connects it to Lake Huron. It extends 350 miles in length and up to 160 miles in width. Lake Superior rests in a cradle of ancient Precambrian rock on the southern tip of the Canadian Shield.

The shores of this amazing lake are rich, rugged, aesthetic and mesmerizing. Craggy cliffs abound, towering over pebbled water edges - often agates are found in the pebbles, especially along the northern shore of the lake. The water is so crystal clear that the pebbles can be seen from great depths. In some areas, the water becomes deep just a few feet from shore. It is one of the most beautiful rugged landscapes on this blessed planet. The shores are often shrouded in thick layers of fog, called dragon breaths. To visit and take time to meditate at her shores is indeed a special gift. Very few can resist the mysterious palpable energy that radiates there. It demands your respect and your awareness.

(Now days it is not measured to be the largest in the world.  I will let you do the research if you are so inclined.)

I found this red sandstone rock on the beach along the south shore of  Lake Superior.  It has a small fossil  probably of a leaf.  I think it looks like a teardrop.  A friend thought it presented a sailboat.  I had it set into a silver piece and then onto a leather band.  It is one in the world and my gift from God.

Today I reached a goal of mine.  I walked 2 miles in 42 minutes

Walking to this intersection is one mile from my home.  There and back is 2 miles.  My next goal is 3 miles and then 4.  THEN to sign up for the senior hikes.  (The ELITE of senior citizens)

This has been a good "reached a goal" day in the life of Grandma G.

"There is surely a future hope for you and your hope will not be cut off."  (Proverbs 23:18)
